Are VRLA batteries really maintenance free?

Yes, under normal driving conditions VRLA batteries can be expected to be free of maintenance during the guarantee period. Which is to say if the battery is warranted for 2 years, then under typical conditions you will not have to inspect the electrolyte level for 2 years. Although if the battery has been subjected to excessive cycling, high loads, a very hot climate, or is older than the guarantee period, then maintenance is advised.

Are sealed batteries leak proof?

Yes and no. VRLA flooded batteries and AGM batteries both have a pressure relief valve that opens if the case pressure rises above 2psi, which sometimes could occur if the battery is overcharged or has been drained below its operational range and then recharged. Gel batteries due to their chemistry and plate design are truly sealed and can be operated in any position and in more confined spaces.

Do VRLA batteries last longer than conventional batteries?

It depends on the application, load and cycling. In a typical 'light duty' starting application such a driving a well maintained car, many repair shops will agree that if the battery has been sized properly to the application, a maintenance free battery will last a little longer than a non-sealed battery. Partly because many conventional batteries are neglected and suffer early failure. But again if a sealed VRLA battery is subjected to repeated high loads and/or drained beyond is operational range then its life-expectancy will be shortened.

Do conventional wet cell batteries last longer than sealed batteries?

For deep cycle batteries, absolutely yes. Some types of flooded batteries are specifically designed to be discharged/recharged many cycles. this requires a vented cap that allows the gases to escape during charging.

How often do you have to add water to a flooded battery?

That depends on several conditions like, the climate, how often the battery is cycled and the application. Industrial motive batteries used in heavy equipment like lift trucks are typically cycled daily and will require daily maintenance. Stand-by & back up storage batteries typically do not get cycled frequently or at all, so their maintenance involves mainly natural evaporation, where hot & dry climates would require more frequent inspections. Maintaining flooded batteries used in starting applications typically takes place during refueling. By making battery inspection a regular part of going to service station will help ensure that the battery will never run low on water.

Do I have to use distilled water when I refill a battery?

Yes, distilled water has the least amount of minerals that could interact with the battery plates and or electrolyte solution. Purified water simply means it been sterilized to eliminate any bacteria, but the water still has any and all minerals. Tap water is generally no different than purified water, unless its well water, in which case the water could be loaded with minerals.

Do AGM batteries require a special charger?

While AGM batteries are sensitive to over-charging, unless there is an unusual circumstance, vehicle factory settings and modern portable battery chargers will not damage an AGM battery. Always consult the user manual for specifics.

Do Gel batteries require a special charger?

Yes, Gel batteries require specific voltages and charging rates.
