A battery is only as good as the charger that fills it. The wrong charger, or a cheap one with a poor charge profile, can overcharge, undercharge or sulfate a battery and cut its life short. The right one brings it back to full charge quickly and keeps it healthy for years. Professional repair shops, marinas, golf courses, warehouses and equipment makers rely on rugged chargers built to run every day.
Battery chargers are still made in the US, mostly by family-owned and specialty companies that serve professionals and equipment makers. Quick Charge winds its own transformers in Oklahoma City. Lester Electrical has built golf car and industrial chargers in Lincoln, Nebraska since 1963. Associated Equipment makes shop chargers and testers in St. Louis. Dual Pro builds marine and military chargers outside Nashville. DPI assembles its own circuit boards and magnetics in East Tennessee. Most use some imported electronic components, and a few also sell imported lines, which each listing notes.

Associated Equipment Corporation makes professional battery service equipment for auto repair shops, dealerships, fleets and heavy-duty service. Its products include wheeled and bench battery chargers, its Intellamatic smart chargers and charger/analyzers, power supplies for re-flashing vehicle software, battery and electrical testers, heavy-duty carbon-pile load testers, and KwikStart jump starters. It is best known for its "Safe in Any Weather" wheeled chargers, which ship fully assembled.
Associated was founded in 1948 and is a veteran-owned family business in St. Louis. Its chargers, testers and jump starters are recommended equipment for major automakers and fleet and heavy-duty equipment makers. It also builds private-label chargers for several Fortune 500 aftermarket companies. Every product it manufactures is tested at the end of the line. Its wheeled chargers carry a 2-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and up to 5 years on the transformer and rectifier, with more than 200 repair centers in the US and Canada.

Diversified Power International (DPI) makes battery chargers and power electronics for golf carts, electric vehicles, and industrial and medical equipment. Its products include DC-DC and AC-DC converters, golf car electronic modules, environmental products, cables and wire harnesses. It also offers custom contract manufacturing: circuit board assembly, potting and overmolding, transformers and magnetics, wire harnesses, CNC machining, engineering design and failure analysis.
DPI was founded in Piney Flats in 1997. It has more than 75 employees in a 35,000 sq ft plant, which it shares with sister company HBS. DPI says it develops its products in-house and runs a full turnkey factory, from design to finished production. Its circuit board line handles surface-mount, through-hole and BGA parts, with automated optical and X-ray inspection. It winds lamination, ferrite and flat-wire transformers and inductors, and makes its own connectors, pins and specialty fasteners. It is ISO 9001:2015 certified and builds to IPC-A-610.

Lester Electrical makes industrial battery chargers for golf cars, utility vehicles, aerial lifts, floor machines and other electric equipment. Its products include the high-frequency Summit Series II chargers (650 and 1425 watt, 24 to 48 volt, with Bluetooth and cloud connectivity), the new 650-watt Ascendrix charger with vehicle communication and field diagnostics, Lester Links replacement chargers, and DC cordsets, receptacles and battery diagnostic tools. Many golf car and equipment makers use Lester chargers as factory equipment, and it designs custom chargers for other companies.
Lester began in the early 1960s selling chargers to Cushman Motors in Lincoln, with four employees in 3,000 sq ft of rented space. It has designed and built chargers in Lincoln since 1963. Its in-house work covers power and control electronics, mechanical engineering, embedded and application software, testing and validation, and manufacturing.

Its lines include onboard and portable marine chargers for bass boats, fishing boats and pontoons, plus chargers for golf carts and low-speed vehicles, aerial lifts, floor-care and janitorial machines, industrial equipment, amusement rides, cars and motorcycles. It also makes Battery Fuel Gauges and energy management systems. Its military line includes off-the-shelf and custom chargers for government and military battery systems, such as the high-frequency Eagle Series for 24, 36 and 48 volt systems.
PRO Charging Systems has designed and built chargers since 1989. All engineering, sales, technical support and manufacturing are based at its plant in La Vergne, outside Nashville. It says it designs, engineers and makes most of its products in the US, using domestic suppliers in more than two dozen states.

Quick Charge Corporation makes industrial and specialty battery chargers. Its range includes onboard and portable chargers, multi-bank, series-parallel and manual boost chargers, and 60 to 100 amp Select-A-Charge models. It builds chargers for scissor lifts, golf cars, floor machines, aircraft auxiliary power units, locomotives and 16-volt racing batteries, along with OEM replacement chargers, load testers and battery dischargers, and it builds custom chargers for OEMs and end users.
Quick Charge has made chargers in the USA for more than 40 years. Its classic line uses transformers, which the company says give chargers a long service life, often 10 years or more. It handles every step in-house, including circuit board design and assembly, sheet metal fabrication and transformer winding. The new Select-A-Charge line, starting with the SM2425 for scissor lifts and material handling, has one-button profiles for flooded, AGM and lithium batteries and a CAN bus connection.

Types of battery chargers
Transformer (linear) chargers use a heavy iron-core transformer. They're simple, rugged and easy to repair, and they often last 10 years or more. They're heavier and less energy-efficient than newer designs.
High-frequency (switch-mode) chargers are smaller, lighter and more efficient. They can store several charge profiles for flooded, AGM, gel and lithium batteries and often talk to the vehicle over CAN bus or Bluetooth.
Onboard chargers mount permanently in a boat, golf car or lift, so you just plug in a cord. Multi-bank marine models charge each battery separately.
Portable and wheeled shop chargers serve repair shops and fleets. They include boost modes for starting, power-supply modes that hold voltage steady while a vehicle's software is updated, and built-in battery testers.
Maintainers hold stored batteries at full charge without overcharging, for seasonal vehicles, boats and backup equipment.
Choosing a battery charger
- Match the voltage (12, 24, 36 or 48 volt) and the number of banks to your battery system.
- Match the chemistry. Flooded, AGM, gel and lithium batteries each need their own charge profile. The wrong one shortens battery life or can damage the battery.
- Size the output. As a rule of thumb, charge lead-acid batteries at about 10 to 20 percent of their amp-hour rating. Higher rates need a battery that can take them.
- Check where it will be used. Marine and outdoor chargers should be sealed and corrosion-resistant. Shop chargers should handle daily use and hard knocks.
- Look for safety and service. UL or ETL listing, reverse-polarity and temperature protection, a solid warranty, and a nearby repair center all matter.
Reading "Made in USA" on battery chargers
Under FTC rules, an unqualified "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. Chargers rarely qualify. Semiconductors, controllers and many electronic parts are mostly made overseas, even when the circuit boards are assembled and the transformers are wound in the US. More accurate claims are qualified ones, such as "Made in USA of US and global components" or "Engineered and assembled in the USA." Some US charger makers also sell imported lines under separate brands, so check the origin of the model you're buying, not just the brand.
