Lead-acid batteries start nearly every car, truck, boat, motorcycle and tractor on the road. They also back up telecom networks, data centers and utility switchgear. The technology is more than 150 years old, but it is still the most widely used rechargeable battery because it is cheap, rugged and handles high starting currents in heat and cold.

Lead-acid is also one of the most American-made products in electronics. Lead batteries are heavy and costly to ship, and almost all of their lead is recycled, so the big makers keep plants close to their customers. East Penn refines lead, makes oxide, molds cases and builds batteries on a single campus in Pennsylvania. Clarios runs 16 US plants. EnerSys, Yuasa and C&D build pure-lead AGM, powersports and backup batteries in Missouri, Pennsylvania and Indiana. Some brands also import part of their line, and each listing notes it.

Types of lead acid batteries

Flooded batteries are the traditional design, with plates in liquid acid. They cost the least and are still standard in many cars, trucks and tractors. Some have removable caps so you can top up the water.

EFB (enhanced flooded) batteries are a tougher flooded design for basic start-stop vehicles. They handle more frequent cycling than a standard battery.

AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries hold the acid in fiberglass mats. They're sealed, spill-proof, resist vibration, and are required in most newer vehicles with start-stop systems or heavy electrical loads. They are also the usual choice for powersports and marine use.

Pure-lead and TPPL AGM batteries, such as ODYSSEY, C&D Pure Lead Max and NorthStar, use thin plates of nearly pure lead. They deliver very high cranking power, recharge quickly, keep a charge for months in storage and last longer in heat, but cost more.

Gel batteries thicken the acid into a gel and are used mainly in deep-cycle and backup applications rather than for starting engines.

Choosing a lead acid battery

  • Match the group size (24, 31, 48/H6, 65, 94R and so on) and terminal layout to your vehicle or tray.
  • Check cold cranking amps (CCA). Meet or beat the vehicle maker's rating, and go higher in cold climates.
  • Look at reserve capacity (minutes at 25 amps) if you run accessories with the engine off or have a boat or RV.
  • Replace AGM with AGM. A vehicle that came with an AGM battery needs another AGM, and many need the new battery registered with the vehicle's computer.
  • Read the date code. Buy a battery made within the last few months, because lead-acid batteries slowly lose charge on the shelf.
  • Return the old one. Lead-acid batteries are almost entirely recycled, and most sellers take back the old battery and refund the core charge.

Reading "Made in USA" on lead acid batteries

Under FTC rules, an unqualified "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. Lead-acid batteries can often meet that standard, because the lead, oxide, plates, cases and assembly can all come from US plants. Many batteries are sold under store and parts-chain brands and built by one of the big makers, so the brand name alone won't tell you where a battery was built. Look for the country of origin printed on the label or case. A single brand can include both US-made and imported batteries.
