This page lists American companies that design and build battery packs: the assembled power source inside medical devices, military radios, robots, drones, electric vehicles, solar chargers and backup power systems. A battery pack joins many individual cells with a battery management system, wiring, protection circuits and an enclosure.

Most battery cells sold worldwide are made in Asia, and US pack makers usually buy their cells from the large cell manufacturers. The American work is in pack design, circuit boards and battery management electronics, enclosures, assembly, welding and testing. Each listing says what is done in the US and where the cells come from when the company or another source states it.

For ready-made lithium batteries see Lithium Batteries, and for chargers see Battery Chargers.

Preview of the Beam Global website

Beam Global makes lithium-ion battery packs and energy storage systems with its own passive thermal management and battery management systems, used in drones, electric vehicles and its own charging products, plus off-grid solar EV charging and power products: the transportable EV ARC solar charger with a tracking solar array and built-in batteries, BeamSpot curbside chargers that mount on existing streetlight foundations, BeamBike and BeamSkoot e-bike and moped chargers, BeamPatrol for electric police motorcycles and BeamWell off-grid water treatment. It absorbed battery maker All Cell Technologies in 2022, has about 220 employees, and sells to cities, government agencies and fleets.

Made in: Broadview, IL (a 37,800 sq ft plant that produces Beam's battery packs and energy storage products, for its own products and for other customers); San Diego, CA (headquarters, design, engineering and product manufacturing).

Imported: packs are built from commodity battery cells bought from other makers, and Beam also owns a 450,000 sq ft factory in Kraljevo, Serbia that serves Europe.

Preview of the Cell-Con website

Cell-Con designs and manufactures custom rechargeable battery packs and battery chargers for medical, industrial and military equipment makers. Its packs use lithium-ion, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), NiMH or lead-acid cells and can include smart battery electronics (SMBus, CANbus or I2C fuel gauging, cell balancing, protection and authentication) in custom molded enclosures, from small portable packs to large-format batteries of 150 kWh and up to 700 volts. It also sells stock smart batteries, UL and medically approved chargers from 15 to 300 watts, power supplies and DC/DC converters, and has served OEMs since 1983.

Made in: Bedford, PA (battery pack and charger design, custom circuit board design, 3D-printed prototypes, assembly, and testing of every pack for voltage, overcurrent, charging, temperature sensing and impedance).

Imported: battery cells come from the major cell makers, often chosen by the customer, and Cell-Con offers offshore sourcing for some products.

Battery pack makers by state

  • Illinois: Beam Global (Broadview), lithium-ion packs and energy storage systems
  • Pennsylvania: Cell-Con (Bedford), custom battery packs and chargers for medical, industrial and military equipment

Common pack chemistries

  • Lithium-ion (Li-ion): the highest energy for its weight, used in most portable devices and electric vehicles. Needs careful protection and charging electronics.
  • Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4): slightly heavier than Li-ion but more stable, with a long cycle life of 2,000 cycles or more. Popular for energy storage, RVs and boats.
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH): safe, low cost and easy to ship, with good high-current output. Common in medical and industrial packs.
  • Sealed lead-acid: heavy but inexpensive and tolerant of abuse, still used for backup power and some mobility equipment.

What a custom pack maker does

  • Design: matches cell type, voltage, capacity and size to the device, and designs the circuit board and enclosure.
  • Battery management: smart packs use SMBus, CANbus or I2C electronics for fuel gauging, cell balancing, temperature sensing and protection from overcharge, overcurrent and short circuits.
  • Testing and certification: each pack is tested before shipping, and packs are tested to safety and shipping standards such as UL and UN 38.3 for lithium transport.

Reading "Made in USA" on batteries

Under Federal Trade Commission rules, a plain "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. Battery cells make up much of a pack's cost, so a pack built in the US from imported cells usually cannot carry an unqualified Made in USA label. The listings on this page say which work happens in the US and name imported parts when a source states them.
