Camera cases protect expensive cameras, lenses and audio gear on location and in transit, from news crews in the rain to documentary teams in the desert. Professional cases are built differently from consumer camera bags. Many are cut to fit one camera model, padded to absorb shocks, and laid out so the crew can shoot, change batteries and check monitors without taking the gear out.

Most camera bags sold today are sewn overseas, but professional cases are still built here. PortaBrace has made its cases in Bennington, Vermont since the early 1970s. It cuts and sews more than 2,000 soft cases, covers and audio bags to order and signs each one inside. Only the shells of its Vault hard cases are imported. For rugged hard cases that also protect cameras, see the Pelican listing on our accessories page.

PortaBrace makes soft and hard carrying cases, covers and bags for professional field production. Its range includes cases, rain covers and polar covers for video and cinema cameras (including the latest Sony cinema models), lens cases and lens solutions, audio bags for sound recordists, and bags for lighting, monitors, drones and other production gear. Its Vault hard cases pair an imported shell with interiors PortaBrace makes itself. With more than 2,000 products, many cut to fit a specific camera or recorder, it is a standard brand for news crews, documentary teams and film productions.

PortaBrace has designed and built its cases in Bennington since the early 1970s, in the same Vermont town where the company started. It makes its cases to order, which lets it change color, material, size, pockets or interior layout, or add embroidery and waterproof zippers, with no minimum order. Materials include Cordura fabrics, YKK zippers, solid steel rings and clips, genuine suede leather, cold-weather insulation and crush-proof resins. Each case is signed inside by the craftsperson who made it and comes with that person's "all-star" card. PortaBrace also does custom bag manufacturing for other companies.

Made in: Bennington, VT (design, cutting, sewing and finishing of every soft case and cover, and the interiors of Vault hard cases).

Imported: Vault hard-case shells, made by a partner in Italy.

Types of camera cases

Camera body cases are padded soft cases cut to fit a specific video or cinema camera. Many stay on while you shoot, with openings for controls, viewfinders and cables.

Rain and polar covers are waterproof or insulated covers that keep a working camera dry in rain and snow, or warm enough to run in extreme cold.

Carrying and shipping cases are larger padded bags with dividers for a camera, lenses, batteries and accessories. Some are built to go in the overhead bin.

Hard cases are rigid, sealed shells with foam or padded interiors, built for checked luggage, shipping and rough handling.

Audio bags carry a field sound recorder, wireless receivers and cables. They're worn on the body, with harnesses that spread the load.

Lens and accessory cases are padded wraps, pouches and organizers for lenses, monitors, batteries and drones.

Choosing a camera case

  • Fit the gear you own. A case cut for your camera protects it better and works better while shooting than a generic bag.
  • Plan how you'll travel. Carry-on rules, checked bags and shipping each call for different case sizes and amounts of protection.
  • Look at the materials. Heavy-duty nylon such as Cordura, good zippers, metal hardware and dense padding all last longer in the field.
  • Think about weather. Add a rain or polar cover if you shoot outdoors in all seasons.
  • Ask about customizing. Made-to-order makers can change pockets, dividers, colors or sizes for your exact setup.

Reading "Made in USA" on camera cases

Under FTC rules, an unqualified "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. For soft cases, the cutting, sewing and finishing are the main work, but fabrics, zippers, buckles and foam may come from US or foreign suppliers. Hard cases are often assembled from molded shells made elsewhere. A company that sews its cases in the US can usually state that clearly, and should say so if a part, such as a hard-case shell, is imported. Check whether a claim covers the whole product line or just some models.
