Industrial batteries keep the economy running behind the scenes. They move forklifts through warehouses, keep data centers, hospitals and phone networks online when the grid fails, store power for utilities, and power missiles, satellites and combat vehicles. The US is a major producer of these batteries, and many American plants make them start to finish: casting lead grids, pasting and curing plates, molding cases, and assembling and testing finished batteries, often from recycled lead.

Crown Battery has made forklift and deep cycle batteries in Fremont, Ohio for 100 years. EnerSys and Stryten run plants across the Midwest and South that build forklift, backup power and military batteries. EaglePicher in Joplin, Missouri powers most US military munitions and hundreds of satellites. Eos Energy builds zinc batteries for long-duration grid storage near Pittsburgh. Each listing says what is made in the USA and which products or parts come from plants abroad.

Crown Battery is a privately owned company that has made batteries in Fremont, Ohio for 100 years, since 1926. Its main product is industrial forklift and material-handling batteries for conventional, opportunity and fast charging. It also makes deep cycle, AGM, commercial and renewable-energy batteries for floor machines, golf cars, trucks, farm equipment and off-grid solar, and sells PHP, Access and EP industrial chargers.

All engineering and manufacturing happen in one ISO 9001 plant in Fremont, which has been expanded six times since it opened in the 1970s. It uses a robotic cast-on-strap machine for plate welding, computer-controlled curing ovens and its own acid recirculation system. Crown moved a factory from Mexico to Fremont after buying C&D Technologies' forklift battery business. It has 615 employees and says it buys domestic, recycled raw materials whenever possible.

Preview of the Eos Energy website

Eos Energy Enterprises makes zinc-based battery storage for utilities, industry and commercial sites that need 4 to 16+ hours of discharge. Its Z3 module uses an aqueous zinc-bromide electrolyte, titanium, graphite felt and an injection-molded plastic case, with no lithium. The modules go into Eos Cube and Eos Indensity systems run by its DawnOS software. It is the only fully commercial US-designed and US-made alternative to lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries for long-duration storage.

Eos makes its batteries from five common, fully recyclable materials, and says most of its components come from suppliers within a day's drive of its Pennsylvania plants. Z3 production began at Eos Ingenuity Park in Turtle Creek in August 2023, with about 250 employees by late 2024. A new plant at Thorn Hill in Warrendale began production in June 2026, funded by a $303.5 million Department of Energy loan guarantee, and Eos is moving its second line there.

Types of industrial batteries

Motive power (forklift) batteries run electric lift trucks, pallet jacks and other material-handling equipment. They come in flooded lead-acid, maintenance-free TPPL and lithium designs, matched to conventional, opportunity or fast charging.

Stationary (backup) batteries keep UPS systems, data centers, telecom sites, switchgear and power plants running during outages. They include flooded, AGM, TPPL and gel lead batteries.

Grid and long-duration storage stores power from solar and wind for 4 to 16 hours or more, using lithium-ion, zinc or vanadium flow batteries.

Defense and space batteries include thermal batteries for missiles and munitions, silver-zinc and lithium batteries for torpedoes and underwater vehicles, combat vehicle batteries, and lithium-ion batteries for satellites.

Choosing industrial batteries

  • Match the chemistry to the duty cycle. Flooded lead-acid is the lowest-cost choice, TPPL and lithium handle fast and opportunity charging, and zinc and flow batteries suit long-duration storage.
  • Size by voltage, amp-hours and runtime for each shift or backup period.
  • Plan the charger and maintenance together. Flooded batteries need watering, while sealed and lithium batteries don't.
  • Check service and recycling. US makers often recycle spent lead batteries into new ones.
  • Ask about domestic content for grid projects, where federal tax credits reward US-made storage.

Reading "Made in USA" on industrial batteries

Under FTC rules, an unqualified "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. Many American lead-acid industrial batteries come close, because their plates, cases and finished batteries are made in the same plants, often from recycled US lead. Large battery companies also run plants in Mexico, Europe and Asia, and lithium industrial batteries assembled here usually use imported cells. Check where the specific battery line is built.
