Pistons take the full force of combustion, so performance engines use forged or billet aluminum pistons instead of cast ones. The American makers on this page make forged pistons in Ohio, Tennessee and California, machine custom racing pistons in Colorado and Nevada, and make piston rings in Arizona. Their products range from off-the-shelf kits for more than a thousand applications to one-off pistons for Top Fuel and Pro Mod.
Pistons work with the connecting rods and crankshaft, and most kits include rings and wrist pins.

4032 or 2618 aluminum?
Forged pistons usually come in one of two alloys. 4032 expands less with heat, so it runs tighter and quieter, which suits street engines. 2618 is more ductile and resists detonation better, which suits boost, nitrous and racing. Piston makers' catalogs list the alloy for each kit.
