Engine external parts bolt onto the block and control how air and fuel get in and exhaust gets out. American companies cast aluminum cylinder heads and intake manifolds in their own foundries, machine throttle bodies, build carburetors and supercharger kits, and bend and weld headers by hand.
BBK Performance makes bolt-on performance parts for Ford, GM, Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles: throttle bodies, cold air intakes, exhaust headers and strut tower braces, plus fuel system parts and cat-back exhaust kits. It has served Mustang and muscle-car owners since the 1980s.
Made in: DeLand, FL (headquarters, with in-house ceramic header coating and powder coating) and Temecula, CA (engineering). BBK says some select components come from international suppliers. Its throttle bodies, cold air intakes, several header lines and strut tower braces are labeled made in the USA.
BRODIX makes aluminum cylinder heads, intake manifolds and engine blocks for racing and high-performance engines: small- and big-block Chevrolet, LS, small-block Ford, Mopar and V6 heads, carbureted intakes for Chevrolet-compatible heads, and aluminum small- and big-block race blocks. The family business grew out of an aluminum jobbing foundry and dates to 1965; its owners still race its parts.
Made in: Mena, AR (heads and intakes cast at its own foundry and machined in its own shop; aluminum blocks machined in-house).
Dart Machinery builds high-performance cylinder heads, engine blocks and intake manifolds for Chevy, Ford, Mopar, LS and Toyota engines. Richard Maskin founded the company in 1981 in an Oak Park, Michigan garage, and it has been part of Race Winning Brands since 2018. Its Warren facility has CNC machining centers and an in-house dyno.
Made in: Warren, MI. Dart says all development, machining and assembly are done at its own facilities.
Edelbrock has made induction parts since 1938: Performer, RPM, Air-Gap and Victor intake manifolds, E-Street, Performer and Victor aluminum cylinder heads, Performer, AVS2 and VRS-4150 carburetors, EZ-Street and Pro-Flo fuel injection, and Eaton-rotor superchargers for Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, Pontiac and other engines. It heads the Edelbrock Group, which also includes COMP Cams, FAST, TCI, Russell and Lunati.
Made in: San Jacinto, CA (ISO 9001 aluminum sand-cast foundry for its heads and intakes) and Sanford, NC (carburetor division), with a race center in Mooresville, NC and headquarters in Olive Branch, MS.
Supercharger kits designed and manufactured in the USA for Chevy, Ford, Hemi, Ram, Jeep, Toyota and import engines.
Cast, machined or both?
A cylinder head or intake manifold starts as a casting. Some American makers pour their own aluminum, in foundries in San Jacinto, California and Mena, Arkansas, and machine the castings in the same plant. Others machine and assemble castings in-house. Each listing says which steps the company does here.
