Most water bath canners sold in the USA are enamelware or aluminum pots made abroad. The canners listed here are stainless steel and made by hand in Amish country: a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania stove company fabricates large canners for gardeners and homesteads, and Lehman's of Kidron, Ohio sells stovetop canners handcrafted by Amish metalworkers in Ohio.

A canner is mostly its pot, so where its steel is made and the pot is formed matters most. Each listing names what is known to come from elsewhere.

Made in: Gordonville, PA (its main office and manufacturing plant).

Research notes
  • DS Stoves' site lists its "Main Office & Manufacturing" at 238B Old Leacock Road in Gordonville, Pennsylvania. Its canner pages describe 15-, 24-, 30-, 36- and 38-quart stainless canners with stainless racks and drain valves, but make no made-in claim; a 2019 company release said "Like all DS products," its items are "American made by traditional DS craftsmen."
  • A directory describes four divisions, including stove manufacturing and custom production fabrication. Lehman's describes its wood-fired canner/cooker as 1/8-inch 304 stainless with cast iron legs and a brass valve, shipped directly from the maker. Where the stainless steel, legs and valves come from isn't stated.
  • Production history: a family business in Gordonville since about 1978–1980; all five of its canners were available on its site in November 2026. No sale found.
  • Our rough estimate: stainless sheet, castings and valves of unknown origin are about 30–50% of a canner's value; the fabrication is US labor.

Level 4 for its stainless steel water bath canners: DS Stoves fabricates its stainless water bath canners at its Gordonville, Pennsylvania plant; it doesn't say where its stainless steel comes from.

Preview of the Lehman's website

Lehman's, the family-owned hardware and general store in Kidron, Ohio, sells two Amish-made stainless steel stovetop water bath canners under its own name. The larger one spans two burners and holds 15 quart or 18 pint jars, with lead-free silver-soldered seams and a top edge wrapped around a solid stainless bar; the single-burner canner holds 9 quart jars and has beechwood handles. Lehman's says both are handcrafted by Amish metalworkers in Ohio but doesn't name the shop.

Our assessment: Level 4 of 5, Made in USA with imported parts for its Amish-made stainless steel stovetop water bath canners

Made in: Ohio (handcrafted by Amish metalworkers; Lehman's names Homerville, Ohio for its single-burner canner).

Source: Lehman's, Amish-made stovetop water bath canner · Lehman's, Amish-made single-burner water bath canner · FARM SHOW, Lehman's canner, 2016, checked

Research notes
  • Lehman's page for its large canner (#3115) says "Locally made in Ohio" and lists "Country of Origin US," "24 gauge, 304 stainless steel" and "Lead-free, silver soldered, 'sandwich-locked' seams." Its single-burner canner (#1940771) is "Handcrafted by Amish metalworkers in Homerville, Ohio." In 2016 Lehman's told FARM SHOW: "This canner is locally made and handcrafted here in Ohio."
  • Lehman's doesn't name the shop. Its replacement shelf for the large canner is listed under Weaver Wholesale, which also supplies Lehman's with general goods such as an egg beater and a corn cutter, so it appears to be the distributor rather than the metal shop. Another dealer's "Ashland" stainless canner, also sold as Amish made in the USA, is described with the same lock-type silver-soldered seams and a stainless rod rolled into the top, so it may come from the same shop. Where the stainless sheet, shelf and wooden handles come from isn't stated.
  • Production history: Lehman's has sold its Amish-made stainless canner since at least 2016 and added the single-burner version in October 2026; both were in stock in November 2026.
  • Our rough estimate: if the stainless sheet, shelf and handles are imported, they could be about 30–50% of a canner's value.

Level 4 for its Amish-made stainless steel stovetop water bath canners: Lehman's says its canners are handcrafted by Amish metalworkers in Ohio and names Homerville for its single-burner canner; it doesn't name the shop or say where the stainless steel comes from.

What "made in USA" means for water bath canners

  • Enamelware canners are no longer made here. Granite Ware's Terre Haute, Indiana plant closed in 2019, and its canners are now made in Mexico.
  • Store brands may not name the maker. Lehman's sells its Amish-made stainless canners under its own name and doesn't name the shop, so they are listed under Lehman's. It says they are handcrafted by Amish metalworkers in Ohio, and names Homerville for its single-burner canner.

Each listing's research notes show what was checked and when, including our rough estimate of how much of the value is imported. Ratings are rechecked as companies answer.
