Most office and home water coolers are made overseas. Natural Choice builds its ION bottleless coolers, which filter tap water on demand, in Illinois.
A water cooler is mostly its cabinet, compressor, tanks and controls, and the compressor is usually imported. Each listing is rated for the company's most American-made line and says what is known to come from elsewhere.
Natural Choice Corporation makes ION bottleless drinking water coolers that filter tap water on demand and serve hot, cold, room-temperature and, on some models, sparkling water, plus filters and cabinets, for offices and homes. James Knoll started the family company in 1990, building his first coolers in a garage.
Natural Choice's About page says, under "Built in the USA," that "The ION is built in Chicago, Illinois," and that "all other drinking water coolers" are "manufactured offshore." Its brochure says the ION is designed, engineered and assembled in the USA.
Shipping records show carbonators coming from an Italian maker in 2026 and shipments from a Chinese compressor maker in 2025. Where the cabinet and controls are made isn't stated.
Production history: Natural Choice began in Rockford, Illinois in 1990 and moved to Loves Park by 2017; it is still privately held. Parts shipments in 2025-26 show it still building coolers. We found no move or layoff.
Our rough estimate: imported or likely imported parts (compressor, carbonator, pumps, valves and electronics) are about 40–70% of the value.
Level 3 for its ION bottleless water coolers: Natural Choice assembles its ION bottleless water coolers in Illinois from US and imported parts, including an imported carbonator and likely an imported compressor.
