Fewer refrigerators are built in the USA each year, as more production moves to Mexico, but GE, Whirlpool and Sub-Zero still build some here, in Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Wisconsin and Arizona.

A refrigerator is mostly its steel cabinet, plastic liner and foam insulation; its compressor and controls are often bought from abroad. Each listing is rated for the company's most American-made refrigerators and names what is known to come from elsewhere.

  • Production history: GE Appliances has built appliances at Appliance Park in Louisville since the 1950s; Haier bought it in 2016, and in 2025 it announced a $3 billion plan to bring more production, including gas ranges, front-load washers and dryers, back from Mexico and China.

What "made in USA" means for refrigerators

  • Compressors are usually imported. Even Sub-Zero, which builds everything in its own US plants, uses compressors from a foreign-owned maker.
  • Check the model, not the brand. Whirlpool makes many refrigerators in Mexico and is cutting back its Amana, Iowa plant, and GE's Louisville refrigerator production ends in early 2027.

Each listing's research notes show what was checked and when, including our rough estimate of how much of the value is imported. Ratings are rechecked as companies answer.
