Steel is the most common material among the American custom frame builders on this site. It gives a comfortable, lively ride, it can be repaired by most builders, and a skilled builder can shape every tube and joint to suit one rider. The builders on this page work in steel, and several also offer stainless steel, which resists rust and can be left unpainted.
They join tubes three ways. Lugged frames use sleeves at each joint, often with decorative cutouts. Fillet-brazed frames have smooth, sculpted joints. TIG-welded frames have small welded beads and are common on mountain and gravel bikes. Most of these builders use imported tubing, such as Columbus and Dedacciai from Italy or Reynolds from Britain, and many make their own forks, stems and racks to match.
Steel and stainless steel frames and bikes, mainly fat bikes, 29er and 650B mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes, plus its own fat-bike hubs, offered in stock sizes or custom.
