For us that means no synthetic chemicals are used in our gardens and the food we source from other organic farms is as close as possible to our market to conserve energy. Our gardening strategy begins with building a healthy soil ecosystem. Plants thrive in a biodiverse environment, where the soil is full of microbial life and an abundance of insects. A balanced soil ecosystem can also mitigate the damage caused by garden pests in many cases. So to create that kind of environment, we start by adding lots of organic matter to the soil. We use animal manures and green manures to keep the soil well fed and we make use of the age-old practice of crop rotation to reduce disease and pest pressures in the garden. We conserve water by using drip irrigation and lots of mulch whenever possible.
