The number of Illinoisans working in manufacturing was 538,985 or 10.6% of the state total, which is above the national average of 9.6%.
Many of these businesses make their products from the natural resources available here, such as, from trees harvested from the forest, minerals & ores mined from quarries, animals raised on farms or crops grown here.
You will also find both factory produced & handcrafted wood, metal & mineral products. Things like, local gourmet foods, spices & preserves, custom manufactured electronic devices & components, also, earth, engine & human powered machinery & transportation equipment, to name just a few. Important sub-sectors include; Machine shops (13,793 workers), Architectural and structural metals manufacturing (12,442 workers), and Turned product and screw, nut, and bolt manufacturing (11,826 workers).
Industries in the Food Manufacturing subsector transform livestock and agricultural products into products for intermediate or final consumption. The industry groups are distinguished by the raw materials processed into food products.
There are a total of 71,163 persons employed in food manufacturing, comprising 13.2% of Illinois' manufacturing workforce & 1.41% of Illinois' total workforce. There are 1,175 business establishments in the food manufacturing sector. Important sub-sectors include; Animal slaughtering and processing (17,516 workers), Bakeries and tortilla manufacturing (16,748 workers), and Sugar and confectionery product manufacturing (7,139 workers).
Industries in the Machinery Manufacturing subsector create end products that apply mechanical force, for example, the application of gears and levers, to perform work. Some important processes for the manufacture of machinery are forging, stamping, bending, forming, and machining that are used to shape individual pieces of metal.
There are a total of 67,479 persons employed in machinery manufacturing, comprising 12.5% of Illinois' manufacturing workforce & 1.33% of Illinois' total workforce. There are 1,610 business establishments in the machinery manufacturing sector. Important sub-sectors include; Agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing (17,010 workers), General purpose machinery manufacturing (14,638 workers), and Metalworking machinery manufacturing (10,557 workers.)
