Alaska's manufacturing sector was 12th in the state in the number of establishments at 533, or 2.6 % of the state total, which is below the national average of 4.0%. The number of Alaskans working in manufacturing was 13,125 or 5.14% of the state total, which is below the national average of 9.68%.
Many of these businesses make their products from the natural resources available here, such as, from trees harvested from the forest, minerals & ores mined from quarries, animals raised on farms or crops grown here.
You will also find both factory produced & handcrafted wood, metal & mineral products. Things like, local gourmet foods, spices & preserves, custom manufactured electronic devices & components, also, earth, engine & human powered machinery & transportation equipment, to name just a few. Apart from finding products that are made in Alaska which we use everyday, many of the items are one of a kind such as arts and craft items, clothing, toys made of wood & recycled goods, and other unique holiday gifts.

Important sub-sectors include; Seafood product preparation and packaging (8,578 workers), Bakeries and tortilla manufacturing (237 workers), and Animal slaughtering and processing (between 20-99 workers).
The Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing subsector is based on the transformation of crude petroleum and coal into usable products. The dominant process is petroleum refining that involves the separation of crude petroleum into component products through such techniques as cracking and distillation.
There are a total of 445 persons employed in petroleum and coal products manufacturing, comprising 3.3% of Alaska's manufacturing workforce & 0.17% of Alaska's total workforce. There are 24 business establishments in the petroleum and coal products manufacturing sector. Important sub-sectors include; Petroleum refineries (403 workers), and Asphalt paving, roofing, and saturated materials manufacturing (42 workers.)
Industries in the Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing subsector transform metal into intermediate or end products, other than machinery, computers and electronics, and metal furniture, or treat metals and metal formed products fabricated elsewhere. Important fabricated metal processes are forging, stamping, bending, forming, and machining, used to shape individual pieces of metal; and other processes, such as welding and assembling, used to join separate parts together.
There are a total of 357 persons employed in Fabricated metal product manufacturing, comprising 2.7% of Alaska's manufacturing workforce & 0.14% of Alaska's total workforce. There are 50 business establishments in the fabricated metal product manufacturing sector. Important sub-sectors include; Architectural and structural metals manufacturing (172 workers), Machine shops (63 workers), and Turned product and screw, nut, and bolt manufacturing (between 20-99 workers).
